Embodied Studies: Masterclasses for Movement Professionals and Somatic Explorers
This series of masterclasses is geared toward professional movement teachers, professional movers, and anyone who is interested in researching their body’s capacity in an intelligent and inquisitive practice that feels nothing like a typical group fitness class. They are an opportunity to experience the intersection between technical nuance, sensory perception, and embodied movement practice. They are also a firm rejection of the idea that getting “too technical” results in boring, confusing, or inaccessible teaching.
The intention of this series is multifold:
to facilitate opportunities for you to apply anatomical information (that might otherwise feel dry or useless) experientially into your body, and to feel how the understanding of structures’ functions and limitations can have an enormous impact on the experience of a movement
to honor the great efforts that movement professionals make with their body, mind, and energy to serve others, and to honor restorative, supportive practices that help you care for and reenergize yourself
to offer movement education in formats with a lower barrier for entry, both in terms of time and cost
to provide opportunities for fellow professionals and likeminded individuals to rather and reflect on what it means to be embodied and care about quality movement facilitation
This series offers two formats: Inquiry and Ease.
-
Inquiry
Movement Education, Exploration, and Discussion
An intelligent, embodied exploration of biomechanical truths, this class focuses on an anatomical or physiological theme as a lens through which we can experience our body. Inquiry visits the chosen theme academically first, providing a chance to (re)familiarize yourself with technical details, before diving into a focused movement practice that offers chances to sense, locate, and apply that information to an exploration of the boundaries of your movement capacity.
-
Ease
Restorative Movement and Community
A sensory driven escape into the practice of movement for movement’s sake, this class offers space for instructors, who spend significant time and energy facilitating movement for others, often at their own expense. Ease begins as a therapeutic movement experience that considers both the physical and energetic needs of professional movers, and ends with the opportunity for participants to share stories, exchange ideas, and to find support and revitalization in community.
